The Early Days
Before the establishment of the modern facility, Grant County Jail operated in a building located in downtown Canyon City. The old jail was small and lacked the necessary facilities to accommodate the increasing number of inmates. It was in operation for several decades before the need for a new facility became evident.
The New Facility
The construction of the new jail began in 1996 and was completed in 1997, at a cost of $2.8 million. The facility is a modern, well-equipped, and secure environment designed to house adult inmates. The jail has a capacity of 41 hard beds and the option for up to 7 temporary beds, ensuring that it can accommodate the expected number of inmates.
Daily Operations
Grant County Jail operates with a daily average of twenty adult inmates, ensuring that the facility is never overcrowded. This approach allows for the proper management of inmates and ensures that they receive the necessary care and attention during their stay.
Facilities
The jail is designed to offer all the necessary facilities to meet the inmates’ basic needs. These include individual cells, a recreation area, a medical unit, a visitation area, and an on-site kitchen. The kitchen serves hot meals to inmates three times a day, ensuring that they receive a balanced diet.

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Standards
Protecting Inmates from Abuse The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has adopted the PREA standards to further enhance the safety and security of the facility. The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA) is a federal law aimed at eliminating sexual abuse and harassment in confinement settings. In line with this law, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office maintains a zero-tolerance policy for sexual abuse or harassment and commits to investigating and holding accountable those who violate this law.
