How to Conduct Sex Offender Lookup

A sex offender in Oregon is any individual the court finds guilty of violating a sexual offense identified under the state statutes. There are various sex crimes or sexual misdemeanors that you may be charged with by the court in Oregon. Committing sex offenses may result in punishments and varying commitments such as sex offender registration, imprisonment, probation, and payment of fines. Moreover, as recorded by the law, the state may penalize sex offenders for the seriousness of the offense.

As per the Oregon Revised Statutes Chapter 163A, the Oregon State Police must provide details concerning high-risk or specific sex offenders within the county upon request. However, the state may withhold information if you are under the supervision of the Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB). You can obtain vital details on Level three sex offenders via the Oregon State Police Sex Offender Registry Section. In addition, you can access information concerning sex predators by visiting the National Sex Offender Public Website. The National Sex Offender Public site is the main repository containing information on sex offenders in the state. You can search by the following criteria;

  • Search by name-you must enter the offender’s last name, first name, middle name, city, county, and zip code in the search bar.
  • Search by address-enter the complete or partial address and state the radius or distance in miles to be covered in the search.
  • Map list search-you can search a map tagged mu geo-pins on the portal. The map search contains various information concerning the sex offender, such as; photograph, name, date of birth, sex, age, residence address, weight, height, hair color, eye description, and a description of peculiar characteristics, including piercings and tattoos.

Other details you obtain from the search include sex crime committed, facility incarcerated, release date, court date, and mug shots.

Alternatively, you can obtain sex offender information through third-party websites. The privately owned websites provide data culled from public repositories and databases. However, you should remember that the information you obtain from the sites may vary from the original governmental sources. Remember that the online sex offender registry only contains details concerning Level three sex offenders. If you want other records of other offenders, you can contact the Oregon State Police or the sex offender registry office.

ICE Detainee Locator

If you cannot locate an inmate on either local or state websites, you can try finding out if they are held in ICE custody. The U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement Online ICE detainee locator system assists you in locating a loved one detained in ICE custody of 18 years of age and above. A loved one may end up in an ICE detention center for various reasons, such as entering the country illegally if the judgment hasn’t been made on their political asylum case, following orders given by a judge for their deportation, or while a removal proceeding is pending.

Below are the two ways to use the locator system:

Search by A-Number

Underneath the language bar, you can locate a loved one using their Alien Registration Number, which consists of nine digits. You can find the A-Number on immigration papers such as work permits, green cards, immigrant fee handouts, and passport visa stamps. If the A-Number has fewer than nine numbers, you must add zeros at the beginning. Alongside the A-Number, you must include the detainee’s country of birth.

Search by Biographical Information

If the detainee’s A-number is unavailable, you can conduct the search using biographical details such as their first and last name, date of birth, and country of birth. If you encounter problems during the search, try checking for misspellings, versions, reversed names or removing/adding a hyphen. In addition, you must provide the detainee’s country of birth for a successful search. You should remember that if the detainee is a minor, you may not locate them online; hence you may be required to contact the local field office to know their whereabouts.

State Prisoner Lookup

If an individual is convicted of more serious crimes such as rape, they are likely to be moved to a state-run correctional facility since they require more security. The Oregon Department of Corrections is responsible for the safety, control, and custody of all incarcerated inmates.

This agency allows you to conduct an inmate search through the “Oregon Adult in Custody Search.” You must first agree with the Disclaimer Notice before searching for an inmate. This tool requires you to enter the following information regarding the offender:

  • First Name
  • Middle Name
  • Last Name
  • SID Number

You can type the complete name of the designated inmate you would like the search or submit partial names, leaving the other name fields empty. For a partial name search, use an asterisk for the unknown parts of the name.

Federal Inmate Search

Suppose your loved one is convicted of a federal crime; the county jail usually transfers them to a nearby federal prison. If you have a reason to believe that your loved one was moved to a federal facility, start your search on the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) website.

This agency allows you to perform an inmate search using the “Find an Inmate” search tool on the site. It offers the following search options:

  • Find By Number: Enter BOP Register Number, DCDC Number, FBI Number, or INS Number
  • Find By Name: First, Middle, and Last Name, Race, Age, and Sex

Third-Party Websites

With several technological advancements, it is now easier to search for incarcerated loved ones in the comfort of your home. Numerous authorized third-party websites allow the general public or interested parties to conduct an inmate search. Most sites only require you to provide the offender’s first name, last name, state, and county. As discussed above, these nationwide inmate search websites offer more specific search criteria than official channels. However, information obtained here may vary from official sites since they are not government-sponsored.

Tips for a Successful Search

Locating an incarcerated loved one in Oregon, is simple if you know how to do it and where to search. There are numerous freely available online. Most databases usually only display individuals currently in custody. However, some inmate search tools allow you to access past and current inmate records, permitting you to see individuals who, at some point, were in custody and have since been released. You should note that several websites usually charge a fee for you to access this information. However, you are advised never to pay for these services since this information is free if you know where to look.

To perform a successful inmate search, you must know a minimal amount of inmate information. At the very least, you must know where the offender is incarcerated or the state they are serving their time at. If you search through the jail database and cannot find your loved one, it is possible that the inmate has been transferred to a state or federal prison.

You must know the name of the inmate who was apprehended or committed to the facility. Most search tools require you to submit your first and last name. Some will let you perform a search using an alias or partial name. Often, when you search common names, you get numerous results. If this occurs, you can filter out your inmate using other fields, such as date of birth. Sometimes the search tool provides the inmate’s image.

Details you get after a Search

After a successful inmate search, you can get both personal and official details. Personal details include identifying information, such as the offender’s full name, aliases, age, race, gender, date of birth, nationality, ethnicity, and physical description (including height, weight, hair color, eye color, tattoos, scars, and defining body marks). On the other hand, you can also expect to see the inmate’s official details, including registration number, arresting agency, booking date and time, mugshots, fingerprint, current charges, criminal history, sentence information, bail or bond amount, court dates, docket number, custody status, facility location, and maximum release date.

Importance of Offender Search

Conducting an offender search will allow you to have information in case an inmate is transferred from one facility to another. Most of the search results will allow you to obtain information on inmates in custody. In contrast, others will give you access to records, allowing you to view offenders who were once in custody and have since been set free.

In addition, performing the search will give you information on how to communicate with an incarcerated loved one in several ways, such as sending emails, making calls, visiting an inmate, and even sending money.
